The weather is getting hotter and hotter. In the rising awareness of environmental protection today, it is a good demonstration to bring one’s own water bottle with them to reduce garbage. But if one temporarily forgets to carry their eco-friendly containers, Taiwanese are always used to buying mineral water in PET bottles or beverage to quench thirst from the convenience stores. According to the statistics of the Environmental Protection Administration of the Executive Yuan, Taiwan will recycle 100,000 tons of waste PET containers, nearly 4.5 billion PET bottles every year. Even in Taiwan, where the recycling rate is up to 95%, this figure is still very astonishing.


In the global trend of plastics reduction, " PET bottles " are still the main packaging material for beverage products. The thing that we can do in addition to reducing the amount is to further understand, “how to make the waste bottle no longer only being a one-time used container.” And after the bottle is recycled, what new products can it make to let the resources be effectively utilized?

According to the data provided by the Far Eastern New Century Corporation, the market demand for eco-friendly yarns are growing year by year. In 2018, the amount of discarded PET chips has reached 130,000 tons.

The waste bottle officially enters into a recycling cycle once they are collected and transported to the recycling site. It will first be classified according to its color and

cleaning condition, then be pressed into bottle bricks of nearly 400 kg by the machine. The bottle bricks will be unpacked, washed and the label will be taken off. It will be classified according to the color of the bottle, crushed, cleaned, remove the impurities, dehydrated, to become clean plastic chips.

The reason why it takes so many steps for the bottle to become recycled PET chips is because the bottles are different in color, and they will undergo different pollutions during the recycling process. Only by classification and cleaning can the subsequent operation be carried out.



Take the eco-friendly yarn for example, the eco-friendly yarn is made from the original color of the PET bottle. The transparent PET bottle will spin out white yarn whereas the green PET bottle will spin out green yarn.

The production of eco-friendly yarns requires a high level of cleanliness, yarns are thinner than the human hair, so the impurities in the spinning process will affect the efficiency of the spinning and the quality of the eco-friendly yarn.

Overall, although the process of making eco-friendly yarn is unable to have more color changes compared to traditional dyeing, it helps to save water, reduce water pollution to achieve environmental protection.

In 2018, the Far Eastern New Century Corporation has used 100,000 tons of "eco-friendly yarn" to produce 500 million pieces of eco-friendly clothing.


The global sportswear supplier, Far Eastern New Century Corporation, which recycles PET bottles and make them into eco-friendly yarns, currently produces sportswear for world-renowned sports brands such as NIKE and adidas, as well as jerseys from the US NBA and American football teams. In every football suit of the 10 World Football National Teams in 2018, there are traces of the reused PET bottles. Douglas Hsu, the new chairman of the Far East, has even revealed that they are working on the cloth proofing for athletes on part of some sport items held in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

Moreover, we can also see the traces of recycled polyester in the application of recycled eco-friendly bottles and recycled packaging materials, such as eco-friendly storage boxes, plastic pallets and even general fruit packaging boxes, could all be products made from recycled bottles. The person in charge of Far Eastern New Century Corporation has indicated that the biggest difficulty encountered in the process of making eco-friendly clothes is that the recycling classification as well as cleanliness in the front end of waste products are incomplete. These impurities will affect the quality of spinning and dyeing, which also causes the needs to overcome the dilemma of stability quality between batches.


More than 90% of a PET bottle can be recycled into polyester fiber and one kilogram of PET bottle equivalents to 0.8 kilograms of crude oil. When the general public can remember, after enjoying the bottled beverage, by simply washing it, lightly squashing it, putting the cap on, then throw it into the recycling bin at one's convenience, allowing this "short encountered" bottle to have a longer-term, a regenerative use of value, this will be a way of showing protection and cherish to the global environment.
